About this artwork

Djupvik, or Djauvik in Gutnish, is a fishing village in Eksta parish on Gotland's west coast, inside the island of Lilla Karlsö. The harbour site is old, with graves and a Bronze Age ship setting on the ground above it, but the fishing village in its present form dates from the late 1800s, when Eksta's farmers moved their fishing here from Kronvalds further south. Herring fishing boomed here during the First World War, the harbour gained two breakwaters, and cod was the other main catch. Fishing ended in the late 1900s and the huts are now summer cottages along the Ekstakusten nature reserve coast.
