About this artwork

Lergravsporten is an arch-shaped sea stack, or rauk, in the rauk field below the eastern cliff of Lergravsberget on Gotland's north-east coast, between the bays of Lergravsviken and Valleviken. The limestone stacks here were sculpted by the waves of the Littorina Sea thousands of years ago, and Lergravsporten, pierced by a natural archway visitors can walk through, is among the most remarkable of them. The surrounding shore is a protected nature reserve beside the small fishing base of Lergrav, where lime was once quarried and burned in kilns along the coast.
