Eketorp Fortress, Mörbylånga

Eketorp, on the Stora Alvaret in southern Öland, is the only one of Öland's Iron Age ring forts to have been completely excavated, between 1964 and 1974, and then reconstructed: its ring wall and houses were rebuilt directly on the ancient foundations, and the museum was inaugurated in 1984.

About this artwork

Eketorp, on the Stora Alvaret in southern Öland, is the only one of Öland's Iron Age ring forts to have been completely excavated, between 1964 and 1974, and then reconstructed: its ring wall and houses were rebuilt directly on the ancient foundations, and the museum was inaugurated in 1984. The fort had three lives: Eketorp I, a refuge of about AD 300-400; Eketorp II, a fortified farming village of AD 400-650, some 80 metres across with 53 stone buildings; and Eketorp III, a medieval garrison of about 1170-1240. The reconstruction shows the second phase. The well at the centre, noted by Linnaeus in 1741, still gives water, and the excavations produced some 26,000 finds.

Every Jason D’s Vision image is an AI-generated artistic interpretation of a real place — original artwork, not a photograph. The label bar on the download may show a creative daylight scenario; that is artistic staging, not a record of a real event.
