About this artwork

Vandalorum is a museum for contemporary art and design in fields on the outskirts of Värnamo, inaugurated in April 2011. Its buildings, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, take their form from the monumental red hay-drying barn that once stood on the site: a ring of barn-like structures with dark red wooden batten facades and metal gable roofs, arranged around a protective courtyard for a natural walking tour through the exhibitions. The museum was the long-pursued idea of designer Sven Lundh, first raised in 1984; construction began in the winter of 2010. Around the barns lies a perennial garden designed by Piet Oudolf, his first at a Nordic cultural institution.
