About this artwork

The Match Museum, Tändsticksmuseet, stands on the southern shore of Lake Vättern in Jönköping, housed in the beautiful wooden building of 1848 that was the city's first match factory, known as 'Ettan'. The brothers Johan and Carl Lundström began match production here in the 1840s, and Jönköping grew into a world centre of the safety-match industry; at its peak around a third of the town's people, some two thousand, worked in the match factories. Opened as a museum in 1948 for the factory's centenary and protected as a listed building since 1986, it is one of only three match museums in the world, set among the cobbled streets of the preserved Matchstick Area.
