Stortorget is the central square of Kungsbacka, a town founded in the early 1500s between two rivers, where markets have been held since medieval times and a monthly market still fills the square. In 1846 a devastating fire wiped out nearly the whole town; only two buildings from before the fire survive. Kungsbacka was rebuilt, and the square is ringed by the low wooden town architecture of the turn of the last century, today housing cafés, shops and restaurants at the heart of the town centre.
