About this artwork

Kumpula, on the southern side of Sandskär, is the surviving fishing village of the largest island in Haparanda Archipelago National Park, at the northern end of the Bay of Bothnia. Sandskär was long a base for fishing Baltic herring and hunting seals, and the remains and buildings of the old fishing village are still visible at Kumpula. Its dredged, sheltered harbour is the island's best landing place, with guest jetties, overnight cabins and a boardwalk, and the island's old chapel, a former granary of 1816, stands preserved near the village with a small graveyard behind it. Tour boats from Haparanda harbour in Nikkala reach Sandskär in about an hour in summer.

Every Jason D’s Vision image is an AI-generated artistic interpretation of a real place — original artwork, not a photograph. The label bar on the download may show a creative daylight scenario; that is artistic staging, not a record of a real event.
