Björnlandet, in Åsele municipality in Västerbotten, is counted among Sweden's most valuable primeval forests, protected as a national park since 1991. Its main entrance stands at Angsjö, beside the lake Angsjön, whose shores are noted for rich birdlife. Many of the park's pines are more than 180 years old, and charred stumps and fire-scarred trunks record the forest fires that shaped the woods, the last great one in 1831. Trails lead from the Angsjön shore deep into the roadless old-growth forest.
