About this artwork

Landskrona Citadel is a different fortress from the island citadels of the Blekinge coast: a moated castle in Landskrona itself, built for Christian III of Denmark between 1549 and 1559 as a purely defensive fortification. At its centre stands the castle, four round corner towers around a square courtyard, ringed by an inner moat some 70 metres wide, with further outer moats and bastions added in the seventeenth century; the whole moat system is among the largest and best preserved in Europe. The citadel passed to Sweden with the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, and between the outer moats lies Sweden's oldest area of allotment-garden cottages.
